Vita

Sofia Isupova pursued a Master's in Space and Communication at Haute École d’Art et Design in Geneva from 2021 to 2023, following her Graphic Design studies Estonian Academy of Art in Tallinn.

Her works have been showcased in exhibitions such as "Vaata mind! Kuula mind!" at Tartu Art Museum and "Tallinn Photomonth 2021" in Estonia. Sofia Isupova's current projects explore the concepts of postcoloniality, territoriality, and the dichotomy of what constitutes a map in an uncertain world. Her focus lies in the fusion of visual art, technology and collaborative praxis through machines.

Residency

Map-making machine: surveilling, tracking and targeting, diagramming, drawing, and redrawing the segments of Ukrainian terrain, all in order to sense the changes in the landscape that are occurring daily due to the current escalation of the Russian war in Ukraine. Installation explores the relationship between humans and machines, the map maker and the map. Looking closer at the remote-sensing infrastructures, and their problematics. Transforming satellite images into maps of the territory. I have build a machine, a metaphorical satellite hovering above the land, mapping the data with the limited amount of accuracy. The images that are being printed come straight from the commercial crop monitoring satellite called EOS SAT. Translating this information into colours (red, green and yellow), my machine can draw landscapes: it can show me the trees, the fields and the hedges. It can show me life and growth, recovery and renewal.
