Digitising Carl Einstein’s literary and art historical papers
Project duration: October 2017 – January 2018
The Carl Einstein Archive was completely revised and restructured in 2001. In autumn 2017, Einstein’s handwritten papers, a total of over 8000 pages, were then digitised. After painstaking preparation, the project, in cooperation with the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, could be successfully concluded.
The digitised material of the Carl Einstein Archive is now freely accessible via the Archives Database and can be viewed and downloaded without registration. The extremely convenient access provided to notes, drafts, fragments and versions of Einstein’s works as well as some of his letters opens up entirely new ways of engaging intensively with the life and work of this author and art historian, one of the first Europeans to write on African art on the basis of sound anthropological knowledge.
