Spring members' assembly of the Akademie der Künste, 4/5 May
"Karl Marx and the Artists. Members’ Talks", event, 5 May
The 51st members' assembly of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin will be held on 4 and 5 May. Scheduled elections are coming up this year: the president and vice president will be elected, along with the directors and deputy directors of the six sections. Together they make up the senate of the Akademie der Künste, the highest decision-making authority of this art society. Furthermore, new members will be appointed to lifetime positions in the respective sections.
Filmmaker Jeanine Meerapfel and author Kathrin Röggla are running for reelection, and both have served as president and vice president since 2015. The election results will be announced following the members' assembly. The names of the newly elected members will be disclosed later, after they have accepted the votes.
The members' meeting will end with the event "Karl Marx and the Artists. Members' Talks (Karl Marx und die Künstler. Mitglieder erzählen) on 5 May 2018 at Hanseatenweg. In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx' birth, Akademie Members take discussions with one another about encounters with his works and about the influence Marx has had on their own artistic production. Jochen Gerz, Regine Keller, Ursula Krechel, Helke Misselwitz, Ingo Schulze, Arila Siegert, Mathias Spahlinger, Werner Durth and Uwe Timm will be presenting. Ulrich Peltzer moderates the successive discussion circles. In between: Abstract Animations by Andreas Karaoulanis. Jeanine Meerapfel will start the evening. News from Ideological Antiquity – Marx/Eisenstein/The Capital (2008), an essay film by Alexander Kluge, and a projection of Sibylle Bergemann's photo series The Memorial about the construction of the Marx-Engels memorial by Ludwig Engelhardt from 1975 to 1986, will also be shown. Tours will the curators will be held parallel to the double exhibition "Underground and Improvisation. Alternative Music and Art after 1968", which will end on Sunday, 6 May.
The Akademie der Künste currently has 410 members in its six art sections. Its archive includes more than 1200 artist estates, among other items. The next major Akademie exhibition "By-products of Love" will open at Pariser Platz on 17 May 2018; it will display works by members Elfi Mikesch and Rosa von Praunheim as well as former member Werner Schroeter.
