10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art
“We don’t need another hero“
Opening on Friday, 8 June 2018, Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg

The Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg is one of the venues of the 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. The opening of all Biennale exhibition venues, such as the HAU – Hebbel am Ufer (HAU2), the KW Institute for Contemporary Art , the Volksbühne Pavillon, and the ZK/U – Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik will take place on Friday, 8 June, from 7 pm. The 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art runs until 9 September (at HAU2 on 9 and 10 as well as from 13 to 16. June 2018).

The exhibition at the Akademie's Hanseatenweg venue starts with a temporary structure that introduces historical and visual elements from two heritage sites and one historical figure: Sanssouci, a summer palace built between 1745 and 1747 in Potsdam by Frederick the Great, King of Prussia; Sans-Souci Palace in Milot, Haiti, built by King Henri of Haiti between 1810 and 1813; and Haitian revolutionary leader, Colonel Jean-Baptiste Sans Souci, an enslaved African who led troops in guerrilla fighting against the French in 1791.

The 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art is curated by Gabi Ngcobo with a curatorial team composed of Nomaduma Rosa Masilela, Serubiri Moses, Thiago de Paula Souza, and Yvette Mutumba.

The Berlin Biennale takes place since 1998. It is organized by KW Institute for Contemporary Art and funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation).
