Final Days and Closing Events
By-Products of Love. An Exhibition with Works by Elfi Mikesch, Rosa von Praunheim and Werner Schroeter
On view until 12 August on Pariser Platz
The exhibition about the artistic friendship between Elfi Mikesch, Rosa von Praunheim and Werner Schroeter ends in ten days. On Saturday, 11 August 2018, at 4 pm, Elfi Mikesch and Rosa von Praunheim invite the general public to the closing event (Finissage) in the lobby of the Akademie der Künste on Pariser Platz. With special guests: actress and singer Sigrid Grajek, Käpt'n Rummelsnuff, as well as the electropunk duo Mona Mur & Gerhard A. Schiewe. The exhibition is open through Sunday, 12 August 2018.
Young, beautiful and innovative, in the 1960s Elfi Mikesch, Rosa von Praunheim and Werner Schroeter (1945 – 2010) set out in the West Berlin art scene to reinvent filmmaking. Their lifelong collaborative friendship as artists tells a story of passion and expressiveness, pathos and poetry, longing and tragic sentiments about the world, punk and political activism, especially in the context of the homosexual movement. Beyond their cinematic works, the exhibition shows how diversified their artistic oeuvres were and are, and how film, photography and painting overlap. Elfi Mikesch began as a photographer and the camera obscura has accompanied her ever since as a metaphor for her circular query: "We make images – but what do images make of us?" Werner Schroeter's photographic works were previously little known. He photographed close friends, lovers and actresses, including Isabelle Huppert and Magdalena Montezuma, his favourite muse, to whom the exhibition devotes an entire room. Among his other talents, Rosa von Praunheim presents himself as a poet and draftsman, using motifs that are also known in his films: love and sex, the abstruse and the abysmal, politics and provocation.
Funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
Closing Event Programme on 11 August
Starting at 4 pm: Actress and singer Sigrid Grajek sings couplets and songs from the 1920s, by Claire Waldoff, et al.
Käpt'n Rummelsnuff
Roger Baptist's alter ego Käpt'n Rummelsnuff has dedicated sports hymns, workers' songs and sea shanties to himself. A "unicum in German pop", he combines humour with an intimidating appearance, sweet-temperedness and sentimentality like no other.
Mona Mur (vocals) & Gerhard A. Schiewe (accordion)
Mona Mur stands for electropunk and dark underground sounds. She collaborated with Elfi Mikesch on several occasions, and created, among other works, the soundtrack for the installation L. A. Tango that is on view in the exhibition.
Starting at 4 pm: Free admission to the closing events + exhibition
