Anti-Semitism is one of the biggest challenges facing our society. It comes in various forms: from open violence to more subtle expressions of prejudice. How is it possible that anti-Semitism has managed to gain a foothold in Germany's social mainstream yet again?
Discussion panellists: Wolfgang Benz, a historian whose focus includes prejudice research, Anetta Kahane, chairperson of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, Felix Klein, Federal Government Commissioner for Jewish Life in Germany and the Fight against Anti-Semitism, Luca Lombardi, composer and Akademie member, Jeanine Meerapfel, film director and president of the Academy of Arts, Monika Schwarz-Friesel, cognitive scientist and anti-Semitism researcher
Following this discussion, Akademie special events remembering the 80th anniversary of the November pogroms in 1938 will take place on 9–10 November. As part of the central commemorative event on 9 November – attended by the Federal President – the lecture and discussion address the staging of violence during the Reichskristallnacht, its consequences and our current remembrance culture. On 10 November, Rüdiger Suchsland's film Hitlers Hollywood (2017) provides the basis for a discussion about whether or not dealing with National Socialist propaganda can make us more aware of the mechanisms and effects of political influence today.
