VISION RADIO. I Can Hear What You Can’t See
An evening devoted to the preservation of artistic radio plays on public broadcasting
A gala of radio to mark the 52nd members' meeting of the Akademie
Saturday, 17 November, 8 p.m., Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg
The Akademie der Künste examines the precarious situation of radio art at a public event to celebrate its 52nd members' meeting from 16 to 18 November.
Radio play artists Hermann Bohlen (creator of the Plopp competition for independent radio play producers at the Akademie der Künste) and Oliver Sturm (his radio play production Die Umsiedler was recently awarded the Robert Geisendörfer Prize) are presenting a gala of radio with live improvised scenes, radio play performances and talks on Saturday, 17 November. They will be hosting the evening along with audio snippets from 100 years of radio history and the present day.
The original artistic form of radio radio play is under threat. Even in an era where there is a renaissance of the audio medium in its varied formats, the bedrock of artistic radio play is being ever more eroded through cancellations of broadcasting slots, cutbacks to the annual budget and staff downsizing. Under the title VISION RADIO, Hermann Bohlen and Oliver Sturm let it be heard what is at stake if the radio play artistic form continues to lose its standing with the public broadcasting stations.
With contributions by Akademie members Heiner Goebbels, Thomas Heise, Christina Kubisch, Ulrich Matthes, Kathrin Röggla and Andres Veiel, as well as Kathrin Angerer, Dunja Arnaszus, Susann Maria Hempel, Felix Kubin and Paul Plamper.
The electromagnetic sound installation PLAY – Zwölf Hörwege (2018) by Christina Kubisch can be seen and heard as well from 15 to 18 November.
The Akademie is planning a focus on the theme of audio art for 2019. As a prelude, the media archaeological installation RUNDFUNK AETERNA X by Jan-Peter E.R. Sonntag will be exhibited at Hanseatenweg from 1 to 7 February. The series continues on 7 February with the Heiner Goebbels' presentation of Der Mann im Fahrstuhl, inspired by Heiner Müller's text. There's an evening of radio play on 19 February with Ach du lieber Augustin, wie fröhlich ich bin by Ulrich Gerhardt, based on poems and texts by Inge Müller. There are further events on this topic in the pipeline.
