Art films play a minor role in cultural funding. The distribution of funds is based on hypothetical popular success. Television broadcasters can participate in the decision, even though fewer and fewer films are shown there. At the launch of the debate on the new Film Funding Act (FFG), various positions on the future of German film will be discussed. From 6 pm in the club room, film clips and trailers by the participating filmmakers can be seen, including from Zwischen Welten (2014) and Der Andere – Eine Familiengeschichte (2016) by Feo Aladag, Material (2009) by Thomas Heise, Der deutsche Freund (2012) by Jeanine Meerapfel and Beuys (2017) by Andres Veiel.
Keynote speech: Thomas Heise, Screenwriter and director, Director of the Film and Media Art Section of the Akademie der Künste
Participating in the discussion: Feo Aladag, Producer, screenwriter and film director, Claas Danielsen, CEO Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), Titus Kreyenberg, Producer, Jeanine Meerapfel, Film director and President of the Akademie der Künste, Mariëtte Rissenbeek, Managing Director German Films, and Andres Veiel, Screenwriter, film director and member of the Akademie der Künste.
Moderated by: Rüdiger Suchsland, Film director and journalist
As she did last year, Jeanine Meerapfel again invites filmmakers and representatives of the film industry to a debate on issues pertaining to film policy in the run-up to the Berlinale. In 2018, the topic was the future of cinema in Germany. The Akademie discussion on 5 February 2019 will debate the conditions of film funding.
