What Stays – Archiving Care

JUNGE AKADEMIE, transmediale and the Goethe-Institut Slovakia award three digital residencies to international artists

The JUNGE AKADEMIE of the Akademie der Künste, the transmediale festival for arts and digital culture, and the Goethe-Institut Slovakia are awarding three digital residencies to international artists for participation in the digital fellowship programme “What Stays – Archiving Care”. The selection was preceded by an international call for artists working at the intersection of digital technologies, alternative historical narratives and experimental archival practices. The selected artists are Aditya Surya Taruna aka Kasimyn, Romi Ron Morrison, and Francois Knoetze and Amy Louise Wilson (Lo-Def Film Factory) in collaboration with Joe-Yves Salankang Sa-Ngol.

The digital residencies will take place from July to October 2021 and are endowed with EUR 3,000 each. During this period, the artists will create new works that will be shown online. The selected artists will present themselves and their work for the first time on 13 July 2021 in a discussion with Maya Indira Ganesh, Clara Herrmann, Nora O Murchú, Sinthujan Varatharajah and others. The hybrid discussion event will take place at the Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz.

The selected artists and their projects:

Aditya Surya Taruna aka Kasimyn (Indonesia)
JOGET-X – A Speculative Archive in Alternate Histories of Indonesian Dance Music
Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of the Javanese, Sundanese and Balinese peoples of Indonesia; the orchestras consist essentially of percussion instruments. In JOGET-X, Aditya Surya Taruna explores the diversity of gamelan music in building up a speculative archive of Indonesian dance music. Taruna is a producer of electronic music, sound artist and DJ, and lives in Bali.

Romi Ron Morrison (USA)
Noticing the Preconditions for ___________.
Romi Ron Morrison is a black queer non-binary artist and researcher. Noticing The Preconditions for ___________. is an experiment in the ongoing exchange between Romi Ron Morrison and Nigerian-American artist Mimi Onuoha. In this project, noticing takes on an archival form by cataloguing caring moments in the everyday lives of the two artists.

Francois Knoetze und Amy Louise Wilson (Lo-Def Film Factory) in cooperation with Joe-Yves Salankang Sa-Ngol (South Africa)
The Subterranean Imprint Archive
Starting with the history of the Shinkolobwe Mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the ongoing research project The Subterranean Imprint Archive explores the legacy of technologies used in the extraction of mineral resources in Central and Southern Africa. The Lo-Def Film Factory was founded by the sculptor, video and performance artist Francois Knoetze and the writer and performer Amy Louise Wilson. Their work combines archival research, dramaturgy and visual strategies with video art, collage, sculptural installation and virtual reality.

“What Stays – Archiving Care”
is a cooperation project of the JUNGE AKADEMIE, the international artist-in-residence programme of the Akademie der Künste, the transmediale festival for arts and digital culture, and the Goethe-Institut Slovakia. The year-long project explores new artistic approaches to archives and the role of technology in making visible and opening up alternative histories/narratives and memories. Throughout the year, the project partners will organise and publish various events, workshops, discussions, performances and online articles that explore and document the project’s themes and findings. The project is taking place in the context of the Akademie’s focus on “Arbeit am Gedächtnis – Transforming Archives”.
