Land – a limited resource in the context of land consumption, mass extinction and speculation

Against the backdrop of climate change, densification and social justice in our cities, the issue of land is again back on the agenda and is closely linked to the environmental, settlement structure and public welfare challenges facing society. In connection with the upcoming Bundestag Election, the Akademie der Künste is inviting building policy spokespersons and experts from the Bundestag parliamentary groups to a discussion on Thursday, 19 August 2021. The discussion will focus on how specific action can be taken to safeguard and reinforce the importance of land for future sustainable ecological, spatial and social development.

Since the global financial crisis, land has increasingly become an object of investment and speculation. How can federal government help to curb exploding prices and rents on the housing market? Do we even have enough reserves of land left in built-up cities? Or do we need a binding land consumption target of, say, 20 hectares per day? And what about the renaturation of areas when land consumption becomes unavoidable? The audience can participate in the discussion on such topics as these via the chat function. In addition, viewers can vote for certain viewpoints in an online poll.
