In her Academy Dialogue series, Akademie President Jeanine Meerapfel will discuss antisemitism with Rabbi Delphine Horvilleur. What do collective attributions of self and other have to do with lived realities? What do we learn from the Talmud and other rabbinical writings about Jewish identities and the fight against antisemitism? What insights are important for a truly pluralistic society?

Delphine Horvilleur contributes her own questions to the dialogue: “To what extent has the (misunderstood) concept of chosenness and the lack of proselytising nourished hatred? How can the passing on of resentment from generation to generation be stopped?

Delphine Horvilleur is a qualified journalist, has been a rabbi since 2008 and is the figurehead of the Liberal Jewish Movement of France (MJLF). She is also the editor of the magazine Tenou’a and has authored several books on the topic of femininity and Judaism. Réflexions sur la question antisémite (2019) was published in Germany by Hanser Berlin in 2020 under the title Überlegungen zur Frage des Antisemitismus (English edition: Anti-Semitism Revisited: How the Rabbis Made Sense of Hatred, 2021).

Jeanine Meerapfel has been President of the Akademie der Künste since 2015. The filmmaker and screenwriter has made numerous award-winning documentaries and films, including the documentary Im Land meiner Eltern (1981) and the feature film Der deutsche Freund (2012). Her new film essay Eine Frau (A Woman) addresses themes such as emigration, remembering and forgetting. It will be released in cinemas next year.

In the Academy Dialogue series, Jeanine Meerapfel has engaged in intense conversations with one or two well-known personalities respectively from the fields of art, science and politics since 2017.
One focus is on conversations about the subject of antisemitism.
