Gabriela Maria Schmeide receives the Tilla Durieux Jewellery from Judith Hofmann
4 March 2022, Thalia Theater, Hamburg
On 4 March 2022, Gabriela Maria Schmeide will receive the Tilla Durieux Jewellery. Judith Hofmann will present her with the necklace containing 34 zircons set in platinum following the performance of Der schwarze Mönch on the stage of the Thalia Theater, Hamburg. In the play by Kirill Serebrennikov after Anton Chekhov, Gabriela Maria Schmeide plays the role of Tanya. Joachim Lux, manager of the Thalia Theater, will hold the welcome address. The laudatory speech will be given by theatrical director Luk Perceval.
The Tilla Durieux Jewellery was sponsored by the actress Tilla Durieux (1880–1971). To mark the 65th anniversary of her stage career in 1967, Durieux instructed that a necklace containing 34 zircons set in platinum be awarded every ten years to an “outstanding exponent of German dramatic art”. Each wearer was to choose her own successor herself. Her own, first choice was Maria Wimmer, followed by Gisela Stein (1977), Kirsten Dene (1988), Annette Paulmann (1998) and Judith Hofmann (2010). Durieux’s necklace and her instructions are administered by the Akademie der Künste, of which Durieux was a member from 1961.
Born in Bautzen in 1965, the German-Sorbian actress Gabriela Maria Schmeide studied at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch in Berlin. After engagements at the Berliner Ensemble and Theater Bremen, she has been a member of the ensemble at Hamburg’s Thalia Theater since 2009. Since 2000, Gabriela Maria Schmeide has also appeared in many cinema and television films, most recently alongside Corinna Harfouch in Das Mädchen mit den goldenen Händen (since February 2022).
