JUNGE AKADEMIE and VISIT award Human-Machine fellowships. New partner of the programme is E-WERK Luckenwalde.

In partnership with VISIT, the artist-in-residence programme of the E.ON Stiftung (foundation), the JUNGE AKADEMIE of the Akademie der Künste is awarding fellowships for the third time to promote international projects devoted to the Human-Machine issue. This year, two fellowships will be awarded, each worth EUR 20,000 including project money. Artists of all disciplines can now apply for the 2022 round of funding via a dedicated online portal. Submissions will be accepted until 16 May 2022.
The complex relationship between humanity and machines has been the subject of art and artist practice since industrialisation. With digitisation, the topic has become more acute, especially in the field of artificial intelligence – with its opportunities, but also problematical facets. The Human-Machine programme supports international artists from all artistic disciplines in their development of new ways of thinking, narratives and approaches to the world in the context of the theme, as well as in their exploration of pressing aspects of the current social and global situation. The aesthetically compelling execution of their work is also a decisive factor.
The call for submissions is especially intended to encourage those currently looking for a safe place to pursue their art.
The new partner in the VISIT network is E-WERK Luckenwalde. In partnership with the E.ON Stiftung, the “Zentrum für Kunststrom und zeitgenössische Kunst” is awarding two fellowships devoted to the subject of “energy”. The fellowship holders for both thematic focuses will be selected by the same jury. The purpose of the partnership is to encourage artistic networking and the deeper exploration of issues of sustainability in the digital technologies sector. One of the artists from the Human-Machine programme will be given the opportunity to spend three months as a guest artist at E-WERK Luckenwalde. A joint event at the E-WERK is planned as well.
The jury is composed of Inke Arns (Director of Hartware MedienKunstVerein, Dortmund), Anna Fricke (Curator of Contemporary Art at Museum Folkwang, Essen), Johannes Odenthal (Programme Officer of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin), and Siegfried Zielinski (Professor of Media Theory, Archaeology and Variantology of the Arts and Media, Berlin University of the Arts and Member of the Visual Arts Section of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin). A new member is Helen Turner, Artistic Director and Curator of E-WERK Luckenwalde.

With its interdisciplinary artist-in-residence programmes, the JUNGE AKADEMIE supports international artists from all art sections of the Akademie der Künste with residency and work fellowships. It gives artists the opportunity to network with members and partners through the Akademie der Künste, to exchange creative ideas in an interdisciplinary context and to develop and present art projects – in exhibitions, readings, performances, workshops and open studios.
VISIT is the E.ON Stiftung’s artist-in-residence programme that invites artists to realise projects relating to the subject of energy and its social relevance. The foundation launched its first projects in 2010. The aim of the programme is to initiate two-way dialogue between business and art.
