Lecture by Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban and conversation
with Hans Joachim Schellnhuber and Matthias Sauerbruch
Cooperation between the Akademie der Künste, Bauhaus der Erde and Wood4Bauhaus
Wednesday, 4 May 2022, 7 pm
Akademie der Künste, Pariser Platz
On 4 May 2022, Pritzker Prize winner and Akademie member Shigeru Ban will speak at the Akademie der Künste about current projects and about the responsibility of building culture and its effects on our lives. He will combine his lecture Works and Humanitarian Activities with the presentation of his modular partition wall system of sustainable materials, which is used, among other things, for the flexible design of rooms and privacy in refugee accommodation. These partition walls are currently in use in accommodation for Ukrainians in various European countries such as Poland, Hungary and France. A partition module will be set up in the Akademie der Künste to illustrate the subject of the lecture.
The event is taking place in cooperation between the Architecture Section of the Akademie der Künste; Bauhaus Erde, a new initiative working for a global shift in construction towards a climate-friendly, inclusive built environment; and Wood4Bauhaus, an alliance of the wood sector launched for the New European Bauhaus. It links the existing lecture series On the Duty and the Power of Architecture, in which Akademie members present current projects, with the lecture series Reconstructing the Future: Bauhaus Earth Lectures. Shigeru Ban was appointed ambassador for the New European Bauhaus in 2021, together with, among others, the climate impact researcher and initiator of Bauhaus der Erde Hans Joachim Schellnhuber. After the lecture on his work, Ban and Schellnhuber will join architect and Akademie member Matthias Sauerbruch in conversation on these new projects. Fritz Frenkler, Director of the Architecture Section, will welcome them. The event will be held in English.
Shigeru Ban lives and works in Tokyo, New York and Paris. He says about himself: "I am an architect, not only for buildings in the city, but also for disaster relief.” He has made a name for himself with his paper tube architecture, his preoccupation with cardboard tubing and paper as basic construction materials, and his humanitarian and social commitment in various disaster areas, including the development and construction of emergency shelters. Ban was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2014. Further information here
