One hundred years after its premiere, the Akademie der Künste is once again presenting Oskar Schlemmer’s The Triadic Ballet in Gerhard Bohner’s new version of the work.
Dance performance by the Bavarian Junior Ballet Munich
7 + 8 + 9 October 2022, Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg
On 30 September 1922, Oskar Schlemmer’s The Triadic Ballet premiered in Stuttgart – 100 years later, the legendary costume ballet can be seen once again at the Akademie der Künste in the new version by Gerhard Bohner. The Bavarian Junior Ballet Munich will present two evening performances and a matinée from 7 to 9 October 2022. The production is a glittering reminder of Schlemmer’s avant-garde masterpiece and of the new directions taken by dance in the 20th century.
Bohner’s newly choreographed version of The Triadic Ballet was commissioned in 1977 by the Akademie der Künste in West Berlin, based on an original setting by composer Hans-Joachim Hespos, who died in July 2022. Following Schlemmer’s sketches exactly, Bohner worked with costume designer Ulrike Dietrich to reconstruct the famous sculptural costumes used in the performance, which are now part of the Gerhard Bohner Archive at the Akademie der Künste. The production was performed around the world until 1989. The ballet only re-entered the repertoire in 2014, in a new version that Bohner’s soloists Ivan Liška and Colleen Scott rehearsed with the Bavarian State Ballet II (now the Bavarian Junior Ballet Munich).
The new production from 2014, a TANZFONDS ERBE project, is a collaboration between the Bavarian State Ballet and the Akademie der Künste, Berlin.
