The Russian war of aggression on Ukraine also poses an acute threat to cultural assets. Museums, libraries, archives and monuments are endangered, and many have already been destroyed. The Khanenko Museum in the historical city centre of Kyiv was badly damaged on 10 October. Located in a 19th century city mansion, it houses an outstanding collection of European, Asian and Islamic art, which the couple Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko collected and made accessible to the public. Large portions of the collection have now been evacuated, as was the case during the Second World War.
The discussion at the Akademie der Künste with the director of the Khanenko Museum, Yuliya Vaganova, will focus on current crisis management and the complex responsibility of cultural institutions as places of hope and resistance. In addition, concrete possibilities of support for cultural institutions will also be pointed out.
Within the framework of the exhibition “PROVENANCE RESEARCH”, the Akademie der Künste presents 14 current photographs by Yurii Stefanyak that show the empty exhibition halls of the Khanenko Museum.
