“Winter Music” presents compositions by Akademie members on the crisis-ridden present

Concerts and discussions
Saturday and Sunday, 10 + 11 December 2022, Hanseatenweg

The third edition of the “Winter Music” festival focuses on the theme “wavering worldview”. Curated by Carola Bauckholt and Iris ter Schiphorst, directors of the Music Section of the Akademie der Künste, the programme presents compositions by Akademie members that reflect on perceptions of a crisis-ridden present. The ensemble Proton Bern will perform. The concerts will take place in the large exhibition hall of the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg.

The focus of the programme on Saturday, 10 December 2022, is on the unusual keyboard instrument Arciorgano, which Nicola Vicentino developed in the 16th century. Inspired by the ancient system of enharmonics, which makes use of smaller intervals than half-tones, the Italian composer constructed the instrument with 36 notes per octave. The organ was reconstructed by Studio 31+ in Basel and transported to Berlin for the “Winter Music” festival. Works by Anda Kryeziu and Caspar Johannes Walter for this instrument and ensemble will be performed. Peter Michael Hamel, known since the 1970s for his performances with a prepared piano and for his founding of the transcultural group “Between”, is joined by his son Michael Thelonius Hamel as they include the Arciorgano in their repertoire. Premier of Arnold Dreyblatt’s Constructive Interference for electronically played Arciorgano and rebuilt double bass. The sopranos Dragana Tomić and Milena Ognjanović will present microtonal folklore singing from the mountains of Serbia.

The concert evening on Sunday, 11 December 2022, with works by Rolf Riehm, Adriana Hölszky, Annette Schmucki, Sidney Corbett and Thomas Kessler, cites Adolf Wölfli, Bertolt Brecht, the behaviour of bees, Carl Spitteler or Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. The concerts will be preceded by the presentation of the Arciorgano and discussion with the composers involved.

Every two years, “Winter Music” presents works by members of the Music Section of the Akademie der Künste. Each edition of the festival is curated by two members, who decide on a theme and select the musical pieces accordingly.
