Academy Discussion: On the offbeat … and its social power in the arts

The Academy Discussion focuses on what is offbeat, useless and difficult to understand as a driving force behind artistic creativity. At a time when algorithms tend to privilege the popular, the easily accessible and the mainstream, it is of particular value to explore the “sound of the centre as heard from the margins”. Who decides what is central and what is peripheral and what criteria do they use? Where are the niches and chasms? Where is the excessively small and barely communicable, which is an essential element in artistic work? How can we show it or talk about it without stripping it of its substance?

In a varied mix of conversations and artistic contributions, comments and flashes of insight, the Akademie members taking part in the discussion are invited to give their input as artists.

This Academy Discussion is the second to take place under the aegis of the new president of the Akademie der Künste. On 25 May 2024, the members of the Akademie elected composer Manos Tsangaris as their President and architectural publicistAnh-Linh Ngo as Vice-President. They are both interested in opening up discursive spaces and are seeking to develop new models and containers for this in conjunction with the members and the staff at the Akademie der Künste. They plan to continue the established series of Academy Discussions in a new form, starting on 15 July with the debate on the question of the cultural reutilisation of the Galeries Lafayette (see Press Release from 27 June 2024).
