Konrad Wolf
Kriegstagebücher (War Diaries) 1943 – 1945
Konrad Wolf was a director at East Germany’s DEFA studios and President of the Akademie der Künste for many years. In 1943, when he was 17, Wolf joined the Soviet Army, fighting with them until the end of the war. During these years, he kept a diary of his experiences and observations—a unique document far more than just an account of the 47th Army as it battled its way from the Caucasus to the River Oder. Against the backdrop of the Second World War, his diaries also reveal a young man on the journey to adulthood. As he fights his former compatriots, he is forced to confront the existential issues of self-discovery and identity.
To mark the 90th anniversary of Konrad Wolf’s birth, his diaries are now being published in their entirety (Edition “Die Möwe“).
