Uncertain States "Goethe-Institut Damascus | In Exile"

Film and Talk

Newspaper caricatures make people all over the world laugh or to stop to think. But they can also lead to legal action or even death. Caricatures are therefore a good indicator for the level of freedom of expression that exists, particularly in the Arab world.  With the help of artists from Egypt, Algeria, Syria and Palestine, the documentary As If We Were Catching a Cobra by Hala Alabdalla takes an unusual look at the development of freedom of expression in the Arab world and considers the role of caricatures in times of upheaval, a role which is not always obvious.

Followed by film discussion with Hala Alabdalla, director, Hama/Paris. Presentation: Fadi Abdelnour, ALFILM - Arabic Film Festival Berlin. In Arabic with German translation.

The next Syrian film evening in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Berlin will take place on 31 October. It features Liwaa Yazji's documentary film Haunted (Syria 2014, 112 min., Arabic with English subtitles). Followed by a Q&A with the director. Presentation: Irit Neidhardt. In English language.   more
