Building Culture? Between Committed Architectural Practice and Critical Discourse

Symposium

In 2020, the magazine ARCH+ will receive the Berlin Art Prize of the Akademie der Künste in the field of architecture – an occasion to question the significance of architectural criticism and building culture in times when they are being squeezed by the market and politics. The failed launch of the Bauakademie is a prime example of how building culture has degenerated into lip service for the purpose of asserting extraneous interests. What preconditions must exist for committed architectural practice and critical discourse, which are mutually dependent, to flourish?

Participants: Verena von Beckerath (Heide & von Beckerath), Niklas Fanelsa (Atelier Fanelsa), Donatella Fioretti (Bruno Fioretti Marquez), Marc Frohn (FAR frohn&rojas), Julian Meisen, Sabine Müller (SMAQ - architecture urbanism research), Oda Pälmke, Eike Roswag-Klinge (ZRS Architekten), Something Fantastic et al.

The symposium is part of the "ARCH+ features" event series in cooperation with the Architecture Section of the Akademie der Künste
