KULA Compagnie: Journals of Exile

Theatre Performance

Journals of Exile focuses attention on 14 years of flight and exile experienced by the writing collective that was Bertolt Brecht, Helene Weigel, Elisabeth Hauptmann, Margarete Steffin, Ruth Berlau, Hella Wuolijoki and others. Hours after the Reichstag fire, they had to embark on a flight that took them all the way around the world, fighting isolation and political impotence through the means of art. Not all of them came back. The question of who will, who must be left behind, who is prepared to stay behind, is the subject of an old Noh theatre play that Hauptmann translated for Brecht.

Journals of Exile is the first joint work by the KULA Compagnie with Azar, Masuma Adell, Mahuba Barat, Zahra Barat, Fariba Baqeri, Tahera Rezaie und Zainab Qadiri after a one-and-half-year struggle to find the female artists of Afghanistan‘s Simorgh Theatre. It is the beginning of a collection of voices and movements of a choir that can only be thought of globally today.
