Afrikanisches Viertel (African Quarter), Schlossplatz, Mohrenstraße, May-Ayim-Ufer: All of these different sites across Berlin have one thing in common – they commemorate German politics/political history, abolition of slavery and colonialism. These sites are witnesses of crimes against humanity and where they were planned, committed or celebrated by honoring the aggressors. But these are also sites of resistance and contestation - both historically and in the present. The change of name of Gröbenufer to May-Ayim-Ufer illustrates what happens when Black feminist antiracist perspectives become inscribed in public space. The tour offers a look at Berlin which enables new perspectives on the everyday presence of the colonial past and will cover select sites in Berlin-Mitte, combining a walking tour and a bus tour with multimedia content.
